What is sin? How do you define it? And let’s be real—do you commit sins?
The Apostle James gives a clear answer:
"Anyone who knows the right thing to do, but does not do it, is sinning." (James 4:17, NCV)
So, what is the right thing? Jesus summed up all the commands in the Bible into two:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ All the law and the writings of the prophets depend on these two commands." (Matthew 22:37-40, NCV)
We know this, yet we still sin. Why? Because sin is selfish.
James also tells us:
"People are tempted when their own evil desire leads them away and traps them. This desire leads to sin, and then the sin grows and brings death." (James 1:14-15, NCV)
That’s the cycle. Desire → Temptation → Sin → Death.
One of the most well-known examples? Judas Iscariot.
"One of the twelve apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to talk to the leading priests. He said, ‘What will you pay me for giving Jesus to you?’ And they gave him thirty silver coins. After that, Judas watched for the best time to turn Jesus in." (Matthew 26:14-16, NCV)
Judas wanted money. He thought he was making a good deal, not realizing he was part of a bigger plan—God’s plan for salvation.
But that money? It didn’t satisfy. Instead, his guilt destroyed him. He couldn’t take it. He hung himself.
Sin never leads to life. It leads to regret, shame, destruction—even death.
So, what’s your sin? Lying? Lust? Addiction? Unforgiveness? Selfishness? We all have something.
But what will convict us? Usually, it’s when we hit rock bottom—when we feel the weight of our choices and cry out for help. That’s when we confess, when we repent, when we seek forgiveness.
Sin always leads to death—maybe not physical, but emotional, spiritual, mental. And God, being just, will deal with it. Whether now or later, sin comes with a cost.
But here’s the good news: there’s a way out.
Maybe today is the day to draw a line, write “start”, and try our best to finish well. Maybe it’s time to seek God and live differently. There’s nothing like a clean conscience and a pure heart.
Christ came, lived a perfect life that we won’t. He died to pay for your and my sin. All we have to do is believe, acccept it and ask God to forgive our sin. Then, simply live as Jesus is our Lord and Savior - over everything.
LORD, help us evaluate our sin. Help us come clean and live clean. Help us desire You and serve others—not out of duty, but out of love. Help us love well.
IJNIP, Amen. ❤️
