Transforming Promises Into Practices

What do you say you'll do—but never actually do?

Think about it. Maybe you vow to eat better, drink less, exercise more, or simply get healthier. Perhaps you promise to break free from an addiction, extend forgiveness, or finally stop procrastinating.

The list goes on, doesn't it?

We all have that one thing we claim we’ll tackle—a hidden vice, a bout of laziness, or a commitment left unfulfilled. Why does this happen?

As King Solomon wisely noted in Proverbs 10:8 (NCV), “The wise do what they are told, but a talkative fool will be ruined.”

I’m not here to call anyone a fool, yet the Word reminds us that mere words without action lead to ruin, while wisdom lies in putting counsel into practice.

God lays out countless good and godly directives. We have wise counselors and inspiring books offering rock-solid advice, yet so many of us ignore this guidance.

Why?

Simply put, we sin. We often choose our own way over God’s path, acting as if we are our own masters instead of submitting to our Creator.

This self-reliance forces us to ask: Who do we love most? Ourselves, or God?

Although it might sound overly churchy or preachy, God’s word is meant to lead us to true happiness and fulfillment—it brings contentment, security, and invites us into the meaningful work of His Kingdom.

His Kingdom is all about love, service, forgiveness, cherishing His Son, following the Holy Spirit, caring for the needy, and living in obedient, faithful love.

The truth is, we feel better when we do what is right and good.

Choosing the simple path of goodness isn’t always easy, but it is straightforward. Too many of us wait until we’re forced into change by crisis—only to find that it might then be too late.

That’s why it’s wise to regularly evaluate our lives, draw a firm line, and hit the “start” button on living well. Perhaps today is that day.

LORD, help us be honest with ourselves. Grant us the courage to assess our loves, desires, sins, and shortcomings. Holy Spirit, strengthen us, purify us, and mold us into the image of Christ. May we finish this life with love, service, and unwavering devotion. IJNIP. Amen ♥️
