Which of God’s commands still apply today? This is an age-old and often debated question.
To answer it, we need to do some biblical homework—studying the customs, beliefs, and cultural differences between biblical times and today. The Eastern and Western worlds, both then and now, are vastly different.
At its core, the Bible is about love, grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
It tells the story of restoring a broken relationship between humanity and God, ultimately through Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. Anyone who believes and trusts in Him is forgiven and saved.
Jesus himself made it clear: “If you love me, you will obey my commands.” (John 14:15 NCV)
God also commanded: “Be my holy people. Be holy because I am the Lord your God. Remember and obey my laws. I am the Lord, and I have made you holy.” (Leviticus 20:7-8 NCV)
But what does that mean for us today?
Jesus summed up all of God’s commands into two simple, yet powerful, commandments:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.”
“Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” “There are no commands more important than these.” (Mark 12:30-31 NCV)
So how does this play out in our lives? Which commands do we follow today?
The ones that demonstrate love for God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. And the ones that show love for others as we love ourselves. It’s that simple—but not always easy.
The challenge is that people have different beliefs, personal opinions, and ideas about what is holy and right.
But in the end, it is God who determines what is right. He alone is the ultimate judge.
If we profess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we should commit to doing our homework—learning how to live in a way that pleases God, honors Christ, and follows the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
And when we find ourselves struggling to make sense of it all or even agreeing and getting along with one another - We love. We show grace. We forgive. We reconcile.
Why? Because that’s how we show our love for God and our love for others.
LORD, help us seek truth and be willing to do the work in understanding Your commands. Your ways are always better. Guide us, Holy Spirit.
IJNIP Amen. ❤️
